Our Team:
The supervising pharmacist is Andrew Mather (BPharm.MRPharmS). Along with full-time dispensing assistants Denise Owen and Angharad Williams we have two full-time counter assistants - Megan Morgans and Llinos Ladd. Angharad Hodgson is our part-time counter staff. Martin Mathias and Cled Davis are our van delivery drivers. We normally use locum pharmacists Ben Davies and Maurice Pritchard when the supervising pharmacist is away.
In order to keep up with the latest developments and ensure you get the best possible service we continually develop our staff by supporting training initiatives. For example our dispensers are currently studying NVQ Level III Pharmacy Services. Shop staff are currently participating in the Cambrige Counterpart Distance Learning programme. Don't just take my word for it - take a look at all the certificates on the back wall of the pharmacy shop!
Dispensing prescriptions.
Whether you have an NHS or private prescription we will be happy to dispense it. (If you have a high value private prescription - by all means ask us for a quote - we can always beat the 'big boys' on price!) We will also be able to give you advice on when and how to take your prescribed medicine, and if there are any other medicines you should avoid while taking it. We will clearly label your medicine with appropriate warnings (e.g. if your medicine causes drowsiness, then alcohol should be avoided). We supply original manufacturers packs or we put all loose tablets and capsules in child resistant containers. If you have difficulty opening them please tell us. We are more than happy to answer any queries you may have regarding your medication.
For further information on our NHS services, please click on our "New Pharmacy Contract at Newport Pharmacy and how affects you" link.
Tablet Organisers
We can arrange for your prescriptions to be dispensed directly into monitored dosage (Nomad) trays . These are available free of charge only if you eligible for support under the Disability Discrimination Act (1995). In order to decide whether or not you are eligible, the pharmacist will have to perform an assessment. However if, having done the assessment, you are ineligible for a free Nomad system then we offer the product for sale at £28.00 at cost price. Alternatively, a variety of similar tablet organisers can be bought over the counter.
Medication Records and Your Confidentiality
All prescriptions dispensed by us will be recorded on our computers. Our records are confidential and include personal and medication details. We take your confidentiality very seriously - all our staff members respect and protect your privacy and have signed confidentiality agreements. Our computer records tell us about the medicines you are taking, helping us to check for errors, interactions or any queries you may have. We only share our data with other healthcare professionals, for example your doctor, in the interests of protecting you from potential harm or promoting good pharmaceutical care.
Repeat Prescription Service
If you are registered with Newport Surgery then you can arrange with your GP to have your repeats sent to the pharmacy automatically every 28 days (4 weeks) or more. You then need only call us to have them dispensed. Alternatively, you can order the prescriptions from the doctors yourself and we can collect them on your behalf. Please call us for further information or if you are registered with a surgery other than Newport. For more information on this service please go to repeat prescription service.
Prescription "Owings"
Sometimes pharmacy shortages occur - but unlike other pharmacies, we promise to deliver any items that we owe you to your address free of charge - or however is convenient to you! Who else promises such comprehensive service! We continually monitor the numbers of owings we have in order to make our service to you the best possible service (our owings rates are very low - between one or two percent).
Home Delivery
If you call us before 2.30pm we can usually deliver your prescriptions to your door on the same day. We charge a flat rate of only £1 for this service - but if your purchase something from the shop as well, we will deliver both to you free-of-charge. For further details on this service please link to Home Delivery.
Consultations and advice

There is also an internet access point (and printer) in the consultation area should you request any information from the internet. There is always a pharmacist available to give you advice on treating minor illnesses - and refer you to a doctor if necessary.
We stock a wide range of human and veterinary medicines, and a limited range of homeopathic and aromatherapy products. We have access to over 30,000 products in all - many of which can be delivered to us 'next day' or even 'same day' - just ask!
'Health Promotion' Services
We aim to provide patient-focussed services throughout the year. By working in collaboration with our local doctors, we have successfully run projects in bone health, diabetes medicines management, asthma, eczema, blood pressure monitoring and "as directed" prescriptions- all of which have been free of charge to patients. Last year we performed clinical audits on all our patients taking the drug methotrexate as well as an audit on new drugs requiring intensive surveillance. We are currently running a cardio-vascular lifestyle assessment project which you are welcome to participate in.
Emergency Supplies
If you need a particular medicine in an emergency when you are unable to contact your doctor, we may be able to help, We must stress that this can only be done in genuine emergencies when you cannot access your GP. With a few exceptions, we can only legally sell five days supply of your prescription only medicine. This is only possible with the discretion of the duty pharmacist at the time and the full cost of the medication and dispensing service has to be borne by the customer. In order to make an emergency supply we will require the full name and address of the patient and the patients doctor.
Unwanted Medicines
We will accept, for destruction, any medicines you no longer require. Please do not hoard medicines, it can be dangerous as well as expensive for the NHS. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept any 'sharps' (needles, scalpels etc) - please return these in a sealed container to your local surgery.
